John Brampton Philpot's Photographs of Fictile Ivory/John Brampton Philpot fényképsorozata elefántcsont faragványok másolatairól

John Brampton Philpot, the English photographer living in Florence, made a series consisting of 172 photographs in the 1860s, which depicts the casts of well-known ivory carvings found in European collections. The photo series (one of the copies can be found in the Hungarian National Museum while another is in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence) is an illustrative example of the mutual influence of different reproductive techniques which played an important role in the practices of the museums and the education in the second half of the 19th century. The photographs depict 'fictile ivories’ intended to be sold and made by the Arundel Society with the support of the South Kensington Museum in London, illuminating the lively European movement of that time, which considered its most important goal to spread artistic knowledge as far as possible.


The illustrated catalogue of the photo series in our publication follows the structure of Philpot’s short catalogue written for commercial purposes. The book also includes the Philpot series consisting of smaller photographs, which is kept in the Hungarian National Museum.


The topics of the studies written by an international group of scholars include the history of the photography of artworks, artwork collections, the making of reproductions and art historical research in the 19th century.

A Firenzében letelepedett angol fényképész, John Brampton Philpot az 1860-as években egy 172 fényképből álló sorozatot készített, mely európai gyűjteményekben található nevezetes elefántcsont faragványok másolatait ábrázolta. A sorozat – melynek egy-egy példánya a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeumban, illetve a firenzei Museo Nazionale dél Bargellóban is megtalálható – szemléletes példája a 19. század második felének múzeumi és oktatási gyakorlatában fontos szerepet játszó műtárgymásolási technikák kapcsolatának. Mivel a fényképek a londoni South Kensington Museum támogatásával az Arundel Society által készített, értékesítésre szánt másolatokat ábrázolnak, rávilágítanak arra a korabeli eleven európai mozgalomra is, melynek legfontosabb célja a művészeti ismeretek minél szélesebb körű terjesztése volt.


A fényképsorozat kötetünkben közreadott, illusztrált katalógusa Philpot kereskedelmi célú rövid nyomtatványának a felépítését követi. Kiadványunk bemutatja a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeumban őrzött, kisebb méretű fényképekből álló Philpot-sorozatot is.


A nemzetközi szerzőgárda által készített tanulmányok a 19. századi műtárgyfényképezés, műgyűjtés, műtárgymásolat-készítés és művészettörténeti kutatás történetébe is betekintést engednek.
