This book is dedicated to Prof. Géza Dávid, the renowned Hungarian Ottomanist on his seventíeth birthday. His books, papers and text publications are of first-magnitude significance for the understanding of the administrative system, demographics and economic history of the Ottoman Empire and, specifically, Ottoman Hungary. His friends and colleagues from Hungary and abroad gathered to present him with a Festschrift. It is intended as more than an expression of respect – an encouragement for work that remains to be done in the coming years for the benefit of all of us.
